South Africa’s Chasing Friday win May's Music Video Title

The world cup of soccer begins in South Africa in just a couple of weeks, and a few native sons have got some winning music to share.

For the second time in less than a year, Chasing Friday have seen their laid back yet warmly anthemic brand of rock and roll reach the top of the Make A Star Music Video charts and bring home a nice $100 paycheck to boot.

In Cape Town, the picturesque port that lies on the southwesternmost point of the entire African continent, vocalist Phill Black joined forces with bassist Nico Mouissie and drummer Andre ‘Mule’ Mellish to form Chasing Friday.

First seen on MakeAStar.com last year, their video "It’s Not Like London’s Calling You" appeared on an episode of Make A Star on Fuse television. The video resurfaced in a monthly $100 music video contest and beat all comers in the money bracket to take the title.

Taking their time to perfect their music and videos, the new song "Take My Hand" and accompanying music video debuted on Make A Star as a contender in April, where it advanced to compete in the this month’s money bracket.

Faced with some excellent competition from around the world, the Take My Hand video cruised through to the final where they squared off against new Canadian electro artist Connekt, whose dark, futuristic, and very sexy music video ‘Kiss’ was without a doubt the best new artist discovery this month.

While the Make A Star judges gave Connekt an edge, Chasing Friday’s army of fans came out to show their love for the group’s unquestionably refined and transcendent music and helped put them in the winner’s circle.

Succinctly describing their influences as “Life, love, friends, family, the world and all the great bands we love so much” Chasing Friday’s debut EP Freewheeling in the Fast Lane is now available exclusively at Rhythm Music Store, Amazon and iTunes. Return to Oz : The Lalita win for ‘Summer Days’

The April Favorite Duo or Band Song contest brought a wealth of stellar tunes to the Make A Star stage. 16 songs filled one of the most diverse and international brackets to date.

The semi-finals were a world cup of music, featuring acts from Germany, Ukraine, Canada and Australia. But it was the Aussies (with some Italian connections) who took the prize.

The Lalita are Mia J Park and Ejay Ivan Lac. Mia is based in Perth, Australia and Ejay in Italy. A long distance musical relationship brought together by technology, their smooth electronic grooves, soft, sweet vocals and evocative lyrics blend together like they are right next door.

Summer Days is in fact a great summer song, full of bright imagery, perfect for a warm afternoon drive with the top down in your car. In the semi-finals the song zoomed past the similarly bright reggae vibes of Montreal duo Lil LuLu and Mellowman and met up with new Ukrainian pop sensation Yuliya Strizhkina in the final.

Teamed up with remix producers Eximinds project, Strizhkina has burst on to the international music scene with Make A Star as one of her chief online sources for her music. The Kiev girl saw her song ‘I will be (Budu ya)’ survive the challenge of accomplished German rockers Zero Mentality in the semi-finals to set up the showdown with The Lalita.

At the end of the last week’s votes, The Lalita had the fan support to help carry them past very close judge scores, which actually put Yuliya Strizhkina in the lead, and claim the $100 cash prize.

In the end though, it’s all about the music, and we’re happy to help expose so many great new artists here on MakeAStar.com. The path to success in a rapidly changing music industry is not an easy one – help support the best new artists by voting here on MakeAStar.com every month!

Glen Yoder ‘Hollywood’ wins the April 2010 Favorite Music Video

The music video competition has been one of our most popular categories the past few months. April saw another deep field of 16 videos, and you can watch them all in their entirety right here on MakeAStar.com.

The fans came out in force voting every day and two videos survived to compete in the final week. The runner up has been a popular fixture recently, winning a favorite song contest back in December and coming oh so close to a music video title for the second straight month. He’s Ejay Ivan Lac, a talented songwriter and producer from Bareggio Italy, and the title cut from his new full length album "Little Drink" is a wild cinematic romp through an Italian nightclub in full 70s disco regalia

But as good as the "Little Drink" video is, it couldn’t stop the momentum of Glen Yoder. This indie rock / folk singer from Campbellsville, Kentucky and his music video for the song “Hollywood” rolled through the money bracket to claim the $100 cash prize. Glen was raised in the rural hills of Kentucky to a family with amish roots. But from those humble beginnings he’s become a world traveler and accomplished songwriter. Enjoy this slice of “Hollywood”, Kentucky-style.

The "Hollywood" music video was directed by Thomas L. Phillips, a filmmaker raised in Knoxville, Tennessee whose feature film direction credits include the zombie horror "Special Dead" and romantic comedy "Rattle Basket".
