Protocol and Tim Current are November's Favorite Songwriters!

There were two Favorite Song competitions held in November, and Tim Current, a contestant who submitted some of his other songs in recent months, finally struck gold as his acoustic gem of a song "Hard To Let Her Go" triumphed in the Male Solo Artist competition. Meanwhile, newcomers Protocol shot to the top of the Make A Star monthly charts and added $50 to their pockets with their victory in the Duo/Band competition for their song "Wall of Colors".

Tim Current,singer/songwriter, joined forces with local Vancouver, Washington band (The Martindales) in 2003 to record his first 12 song cd due to be finished in the spring of 2004. They currently have a large library of songs still yet to be recorded in the country/rock/pop/ballad genre.

Easy listening with an edge, its a must hear for fans of The Eagles to Blue Rodeo and everything in between! Here's what writer Jim Cooper had to say about Tim's new album: Why did Tim call this recording Convergence? Perhaps it’s because the songs converge lyrically and musically into radio-friendly numbers that will appeal to listeners who disdain the simplicity of most pop music. And what a convergence it is. Backed by the imitable Martindales, a band whose versatility and rock and roll credentials provide the perfect accompaniment to the rich material, Tim Current’s superb songwriting and vocals immediately capture the ear. From the opening chords of “Living a Lie” to the subtle harmonies that close “Till the End of Time,” you can practically hear the enthusiasm.

Add Kevin Nettleingham’s skillful production to the mix, and the result is an album that will easily withstand the test of time, sounding as fresh twenty years from now as it does today. Although most of Tim’s songs focus on the enduring topic of love and relationships, this album is not simply a collection of boy meets girl/boy loses girl songs. Relationships are never that simple; even the best ones are messy, complicated, and nuanced. Tim’s music reflects that reality brilliantly.

Who can’t relate to the cocktail of loss, bitterness and resignation served in “Living a Lie” or to Tim’s homage to love’s transformative power, “You Set Me Free?” And when, in the hard rocking “She Likes the Way,” Tim sings “She loves it when I tell her she’s so fine / I love it when she slips her little hand in mine,” who doesn’t agree that small gestures create strong bonds? In one of the album’s strongest cuts, “Malibu,” Tim demonstrates the hollowness of luxury without love when he croons “It’s gonna be 85 again and there’s not a cloud in sight / The major train wreck of the day is if the PH level’s right.” The fact is Tim understands human nature, and his ability to express that understanding in words and music bodes well for the discriminating listener. If you’re looking for authenticity and sophistication that transcends typical pop formulas, then you’ve come to the right place.

Protocol is a well-rounded rock band from Connecticut. Joe (vocals, guitar, bass) and Tyler (guitar), began writing songs together in 2003. Ryan Laney soon joined on keyboard and mandolin, followed by Matt on bass and Emily on drums (and occasionally bass). Their good friend Nick occasionally plays with the band on baritone sax and vocals.

Throughout their high school careers, Protocol was mainly a recording group, performing a few times at Toquet Hall in Westport, CT, and in their high school's talent show. By the summer of 2007 (the graduating year of the majority of the band's members) Protocol had completed Faceless, their first full album, and by the summer of 2009 they finished work on their second, Verbatim, recording only during college breaks.

Protocol's music reflects its members' backgrounds in and love of both rock and classical music. When asked about their influences, they usually list Aerosmith, The Beatles, Neil Young, Led Zeppelin, Guns N' Roses, and Dispatch.

Protocol has a third album in the works and Joe and Ryan Laney are working on a musical about their experiences in high school as well.

The Disablists feat. Foreign Beggars Win November Music Video

The number one Music Video on Make A Star’s November charts and winner of the $100 cash prize is “Heavy Rotation” by The Disablists featuring Foreign Beggars – a blast of new British hip hop directed by London based stop-motion animator Lee Hardcastle.

“Heavy Rotation” is a collaborative song featuring the vocal skills of Foreign Beggars, a prolific and versatile UK hip hop collective, and The Disablists, a former jazz trio who evolved into skilled turntablists.

Foreign Beggars’ roots also stem from jazz and classical training that over turn turned into performing hip hop, death/power-metal and drum & bass – an eclectic musical stew that speaks to the varied experiences of the group’s roster of talent - MC's Metropolis and Orifice Vulgatron, Producer Dag Nabbit, Human Beat boxers Shlomo, Uk Beatbox Champion MC Zani and DJ Nonames.

Individually, 'Foreign Beggars' have achieved a range high profile accomplishments, from appearances on Bjork's 'Medulla' album and the Gorillaz single 'Tomorrow Never Comes', to remix production for Amp Fiddler and Corinne Bailey Rae, and touring the States with James Lavelle's UNKLE outfit.

The Disablists are three time UK DMC World DJ Champions who have supported hip hop and Drum and Bass acts such as The Wu-Tang Clan’s GZA, Skinnyman, Killa Kela, Taskforce, Klashnekoff, Sway, AndyC, Pendulum, Friction, Mampi Swift, and Simon Bassline Smith.

Lee Hardcastle is a director, animator, and comic book artist living in London. A fan of the surreal, visually intense work of David Lynch, Spike Jonez, Adrian Tomine and Nintendo, his work can be found on his website www.MissingHead.co.uk

US vs UK hip hop in the Music Video Final - Sapient and The Disabilists feat Foreign Beggars Advance

Sapient 'She Doesn't Love Me' Portland, Oregon.

Sapient, a rare breed of emcee, is blessed with gifts of discernment and rhythm, has been a loyal member of sandpeeps since the early developemental stages. He lives in a basement underground, where he sacrifices old records to the sample god. Formerly just a graf writer, he never could be fulfilled with only the visual arts, so with the help of a musical inclination, things fell into place. In 2000 when he first focused his writing skills to hiphop, he had no colleagues. This struggle, and uncanny stamina lead to his amazing beat-making ability, and with no one to learn from he developed a very original understanding of rhyme schemes and precision.

After releasing a multitude of self-made albums and destroying countless stages in the northwest, Sapient joined the super-crew Sandpeople. They released their debut lp (Points of View), which was followed by Sapient’s debut solo lp (Dry Puddles) and Graise Period (produced by Elliot B.). In 2005, Sandpeople released their their second lp (All in Vain). It was not long after that Sapient and Ethic formed the torrential duo named Debaser. “Crown Control”, Debaser’s debut album, was released in June 2006, which was a portfolio of Sapient and Ethic as emcees, but also of Sapient’s ability as a producer. Debaser also released an Australian exclusive 12” w/ Grayskul, and scribble jam ‘04 champ: iLLmacuLate.
In this day and age where every emcee thinks they can sing, Sapient is a true renaissance man of words and melodies, playing guitar, piano, bass, drums and whatever the fuck else he feels like. He is currently grinding on two solo projects as well as Sandpeople 3.

This is the first of three music videos coming out for the "Famine Friends" campaign. Shot all in one day, Sapient describes Mother Earth as being a masochist and enjoying the abuse we put her through. Directed by Lee Hardcastle, the official music video for 'Heavy Rotation', a collaborative song between turntablist group The Disablists and grime MCs Foreign Beggars, is a manic work of stop motion animation.

Averaging well over 100 shows per year, 'Foreign Beggars' are one of the most prolific and versatile Hip Hop outfits to emerge from the UK. Consisting of MC's Metropolis and Orifice Vulgatron, Producer Dag Nabbit, Human Beat boxers Shlomo, Uk Beatbox Champion MC Zani and DJ Nonames.

With roots ranging from jazz and classical training, to years of writing recording and performing hip hop, death/power-metal and drum & bass the group's varied experiences combine to create one of the most explosive live rap showcases on the planet.

Whilst also having collaborated with a slew of hip hop heavy weights including Stones Throw's OhNo, Guilty Simpson, Wildchild and Dudley Perkins, producer supreme DJ Vadim, Dabrye, Scratch Perverts, Skinnyman, Task Force and Spain's Griffi and Tote King they have worked from a host of other genres including Vex'd, Virus Syndicate, Natalie Williams, Noisia and Ram Record's Subfocus.

Championed on national radio by Zane Lowe, Pete Tong and Tim Westwood, Nonames and Orifice are now into their second year presenting a weekly hip hop and grime show on the BBC Asian Network.

The Disablists started life as a Jazz Trio, realised that they had no talent for real instruments and bought turntables. They have been UK DMC Team Champions three times (in 2004/2005/2006) and came third at the world finals in 2005 and second in 2006. The guys have been mad busy recently playing up and down the UK. London, Rome and Portland Battle in Make A Star Music Video Semi Finals

MakeAStar.com's monthly $100 Favorite Music Video contest continues to be an international showcase of the best new music videos in November 2009.

Following the previous wins for South Africa rock band Chasing Friday and Swiss electro maven Stu (with a video produced by Russian design agency Toondra), the semi-finals for the November contest feature two English bands and one Italian vocalist vying for the prize against a Portland, Oregon rap act.

The first semi-final is a London derby between The Disablists and Senadee.

Senadee London, United Kingdom

Senadee is the pseudonym of singer and musician Sena Verdi, who was born in Iran two years after that country's revolution. His family moved to the UK soon after, and Verdi drew inspiration from "bands with big ideas" such as The Smashing Pumpkins, Oasis, The Stone Roses, Radiohead and U2.

Senadee's song in this contest, 'My Fault' caught the attention of up and coming producer Ben Gold (Son of veteran DJ and Dance music Pioneer Graham Gold). Gold used a sample of the song to produce what was to become one of the biggest underground Dance tunes of 2008, 'Say The Words'. The track was signed to Flux Delux, a sub-label of Recoverworld Records, one of the most famous Indie dance labels in the world. The song was showcased by Armin van Buuren and received heavy rotation on Radio One by dance DJ's Judge Jules and Dave Pearce.

The music video for My Fault was Produced & Directed by the up and coming Director Shane Ward, this video was commissioned by the artist upon seeing some of Shane's previous short film work - specifically the intense, visceral "Rupture". The artist is releasing his debut solo single "My Fault" very soon and the label required him to provide a video (after the last people who were requested to make a video for this song completely screwed it up). Sadly the budget was tiny, and there was only one day to shoot it, but all the money went in front of the camera - in this case a RED one. Sherrie Erickson wins Female Solo Artist. Sherrie Erickson is a singer/songwriter/guitarist from British Columbia, Canada. At age eight, Sherrie’s father placed his guitar in her lap and taught her the basics. From there she became an active part of a family of singers and musicians harmonizing with her mother and sisters. She has performed with her parents at weddings, churches, and fairs. As a singer/songwriter, stay-at-home mom she has been through the joys and difficulties of marriage, motherhood, mortgages, and life in general, she uses these experiences as inspiration for many of her songs.

"Happy"
This song "Happy" is about how we tend to compare ourselves to what others have and try to keep up with them. Through the struggle's of everyday, we discover that all we really want is to be Happy!

Lyrics: I Just wanna be "Happy" Lyrics and Music by Sherrie Erickson 2007 VS. 1 Some days are a little tougher than the day before But what can you do about that Go with the flow and take a breath, Don’t let it get to you They say that this shall pass I wonder is the grass really greener on the other side of the street The more I want to know, try to keep up with the Jones The less satisfied I can be I strive for this, I strive for that but all I really want is to be happy CH: To be happy I wanna be happy Just happy, I wanna be happy All I want is to be Happy VS. 2 So I’m not gonna worry what other people say about me, no, no, no Im just gonna be content on my side of the fence and be me So just shut-up I’m not listening to that nullifying voice In my head, anymore This is the life I’ve got, I’m gonna give it my best shot Not keeping score, anymore Yeah, I used to play that game but it never ever really made me happy CH: I said happy I wanna be happy Just happy, I wanna be happy All I want is to be Happy Happy I wanna be happy Just happy, oooh happy I said , all I want is to be all I want is to be Happy That’s all!

Sherrie is facing Corrin Campbell in the semi-final match. Corrin Campbell is a singer-songwriter from Belcamp, Maryland.

"Remember Me"
I wrote this song about my little brother, who lives about 1700 miles from me. It's really hard to be that far from family. Here are the lyrics: VERSE 1: I have to leave and it breaks my heart. How will I be there for you? We're so far apart. A hole is left whenever one is gone. I can't abandon, it feels so wrong. Feels so wrong. CHORUS: You wrote my name in the sand but the tide is rollin' in. Don't forget me, I know you can... You wrote my name in the sand but the tide is rollin' in. Don't forget me, I know you can remember me. Remember me, remember me. VERSE 2: Twice a year is all we get; put my face in a frame so I can watch over you and I'll do the same. The blood holds tight over all the miles but nonetheless I'll be missin' your smile. Missin' your smile. CHORUS BRIDGE: Little brother, little brother, how will I keep you safe? Little brother, little brother, we'll be together someday. CHORUS You wrote it down- The waves crash down- Promise me you'll remember me- I know you can remember me.

Corrin Campbell and The Election Win Duo/Band Song 4

Corrin Campbell has just claimed her second song victory, as she follows the Female Vocalist triumph of her piano and vocal ballad “When It Rains” with another $50 cash prize win – this time by the song “Sunbeam” which features the full-on rock and roll backing of her band The Election.

Make A Star's 4th Song music contest for duos or bands expanded to 8 contestants, and the past three weeks saw some close matches amongst the diverse array of exciting new bands filling up the Make A Star airwaves. The other finalist of the bracket contest was British Columbia, Canada hard rock band Quartered, who hoped to follow fellow Canadian acts Natalie Brown and Eireann O’Day with a $50 win. Quartered’s song “Mandible”, a cut from their 2008 album “Straight Out The Sandbox” is an impressive track that alternative rock guitar fans of Tool or Mudvayne need to hear. Clocking in at 5:34, “Mandible” is a dramatic journey of a song with many sonic peaks and valleys.

Listen to Quartered ‘Mandible’ and Corrin Campbell and the Election ‘Sunbeam’ here.

Corrin Campbell is a native of Superior, Wisconsin, the state’s cold northwest corner on the Minnesota border. After high school, she joined the Army and served as a vocalist and bass guitarist in the Army Band Field. Corrin was then deployed with the 1st Calvary Division in Baghdad, Iraq to serve in the Iraq war. Her official Wikipedia entry states that most of her time in Iraq “consisted of travel by Blackhawk to entertain soldiers across Iraq. She was featured at many high-profile shows, including the farewell parties of General Ricardo Sanchez and Ambassador Paul Bremer. She also met and opened for Robin Williams, Ted Nugent and Toby Keith when their USO tours came through Baghdad.”

Since returning from Iraq, Corrin has made the Baltimore, Maryland area her home and performs live with her band The Election, which features drummer Tony Corbett and Jim Boyer on Guitar. The band plays regular gigs throughout the Baltimore, Washington D.C. and Virginia regions, and this year has also played shows in Nashville, Austin and Atlanta.

With such strong life experiences to build on, Corrin Campbell seems poised for a bright road ahead, and music fans should be excited to know that a lot more new songs will be a part of that future. Make A Star is proud to have an artist able to create songs as diverse and catchy as “When It Rains” and “Sunbeam” in its list of 2009 contest winners.

Pamela Payge and Link Cornell Win Latest Best Song Contests

The 4th Best Song – Female Vocalist contest ended Thursday, Sept. 17th at noon pacific time here on MakeAStar.com. San Diego chanteuse Pamela Payge and Virginia piano man Link Cornell put their names in lights with victories.

Pamela Payge’s song ‘This Time’ is a tight, exciting, danceable blend of pop and guitar rock with the exotic vocals and look of this southern California girl. ‘This Time’ is a track from Pamela Payge’s recently released debut album 'Love and Hate' which is now available through CD Baby, iTunes, and Amazon. Pamela Payge has a lot of potential for mainstream pop success. Check out the official Pamela Payge website for more music photos and video at www.PamelaPayge.com

The final match was a close battle with a northern California girl named Lisa Gardenia, who brought a laid back groove and soulful voice to her song ‘Nuthinz What It Seemz’. Lisa Gardenia gained a lot of new fans with her Make A Star appearance, but in the end came up just short to Pamela Payge.

Listen to Pamela Payge ‘This Time’ and Lisa Gardenia ‘Nuthinz What It Seemz’.

Link Cornell triumphed in the first Best Song Male Vocalist contest earlier this summer, and the talented Virginia singer/songwriter returned again to claim another $50 cash prize with his outstanding pop song ‘Always’.

A tight groove reminiscent of classic Motown hits of the 60s and 70s, yet with a beat and hiphop inflections that keep it up to date, this song really shows the talent of Link Cornell at his best. We see no reason why this song shouldn’t be on the top of anyone’s list of songs to buy.

The competition in the final came from the pacific northwest, as Vancouver, Washington singer Tim Current and his song ‘Another Bridge’ gained a lot of fans with this relaxing tune, featuring a nice blend of acoustic guitar backed vocals.

Mahoney Wins Best Music Video 6

Directed by former Open Mic talent contest comedian Marty Stano, the hilarious video sees the dynamic duo performing a high-energy aerobics routine in some very 1980s outfits.

The band brought out a strong crowd of fans, many from their home state, and that support combined with high judge scores all around helped Mahoney open out a big lead on their challenger, South African rock band 12th Avenue, and their video for ‘Over The Edge’.

Watch Mahoney 'Turn Out The Lights and Turn On The Stereo' and 12th Avenue 'Over The Edge'

Mahoney's music is a solid rock and roll recipe, with the hard edged, angular simplicity of The White Stripes and an ample sense of fun and humor. Add a brilliantly directed music video by a proven comedian to the mix, and it all adds up to two guys from the University of Michigan becoming the 6th winner of Make A Star's $100 Best Music Video contests. Who will be winner number 7? The action is set to launch next week!

New Best Song Contest Winners

Another round of Best Song contests wrapped up this Wednesday and Thursday, as Male Vocalist, Female Vocalist, Duo or Band, and Instrumental contestants were crowned with Best Song titles.

In the 3rd Male Vocalist competition, the British Invasion was in full effect, as Leicester, England native Charlee Drew took the energizing pop pulse his song ‘Sugar Rush’ straight to the top of the charts, defeating the challenge from yet another great song by New York’s ISADAR, entitled ‘To Be In Love’.

Listen to Charlee Drew 'Sugar Rush'

The 3rd Female Vocalist contest went to Maryland’s Corrin Campbell, who after coming up short to Natalie Brown in the 1st female vocalist contest with her guitar backed song ‘Always Be’ returned with a soaring piano ballad ‘When It Rains’ that showcased her talented voice and took the title over the fierce competition of Los Angeles based singer Tenaj and her hot dance club anthem ‘What’s Your Status’. A native of Switzerland who speaks fluent German and Croatian, Tenaj scored high numbers for her song, but Corrin Campbell scored even higher marks in this high quality contest. Corrin is now back with her band The Election in the Duo or Band contest with another hot song called ‘Sunbeam’. Can she keep on winning?

Listen to Corrin Campbell 'When It Rains'

Belgian rock band Lewis Cat has kept on winning, as the Best Music Video 4 champion claimed another title, this time in Best Song Duo or Band 3 with their second single to feature on MakeAStar.com, entitled ‘War in the Bathroom II’. The felines scratched and clawed their way past the imposing rock challenge of Dallas, Texas band PANIC, who nearly won the best song prize on the strength of their dramatic hard rock song ‘Paradise’.

Listen to Lewis Cat 'War in the Bathroom II'

The 2nd Best Song Instrumental contest awarded $50 to the earthy drum circle sounds of Richmond Virginia duo Durty Koalas. The positive vibrations of their song ‘Free Smile’ brought out a large number of Durty Koalas fans who helped propel the song past the high judge scores of English multi-instrumentalist and composer Bill Brown and his guitar driven song ‘The Change’.
